9 BJP-RSS workers sentenced to life imprisonment in DYFI activist’s murder

The Thalassery Additional Sessions court on Tuesday sentenced nine BJP-RSS activists to life imprisonment for the murder of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activist Rijith (26) from Kannapuram in 2005.

Sessions court judge Ruby K Jose also imposed a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh on the convicted individuals.

Of the 10 accused in the case, the third accused, Ajesh, died in a car accident during the trial. The remaining nine convicted are VV. Sudhakaran (57) of Vayakodan in Kannapuram, KT. Jayesh (41) of Kothilathazhe, CP. Ranjith (44) of Chankulatparambil, PP. Ajeendran (51) of Puthiapura, IV. Anilkumar (52) of Illikkavalappul, PP. Rajesh (46) of Puthiapura, PV. Srikanth (47) of Vadakeveetil in Kannapuram, his brother VV. Sreejith (43), and Thekkaveettil PV. Bhaskaran (67)

Rijith of Alachi House and member of CPI-M Kannapuram Chunda branch and an active DYFI worker was murdered in the night of October 3 in 2005 . Rijith was brutally hacked to death near the Thachankandi temple while returning from work. Three of his companions, DYFI activists K V Nikesh, R S Vikas, and K N Vamal, sustained injuries in the attack. The dispute over the opening of an RSS branch in the area led to the murder .

A police investigation led by then Valapattanam Circle Inspector T P Premarajan found that the attack was related to a dispute over opening an RSS branch near the Thachankandi temple.

Earlier on Saturday , the Additional District Sessions Court in Thalassery found the accused guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder (Section 302), attempted murder (Section 307), unlawful assembly (Section 143), rioting (Section 147), wrongful restraint (Section 341), and voluntarily causing hurt with weapons (Section 324).
